A powerful opening and a greeting from Dolly Parton herself set the stage for a hilarious evening of music and mishaps. Characters were quickly drawn as we were enveloped in to the prison like offices of Consolidated Industries. The set was primary coloured blocks with a fake lift dominating the centre, clinical at the extreme, various additional trucks and furnishing then were added to depict Harts Office, House and Violet’s home. Violet a tired dedicated office manager, bringing up her teenage son alone after being recently widowed was beautifully portrayed both physically and vocally. Doralee had captured the Dolly Parton persona perfectly with little touches of her own added for good measure, this was certainly no backwoods Barbie and one of the best pieces of characterisation I’ve seen from this young lady and a vocal challenge she met head on. The innocence of Judy was adorable and her development into a strong sassy gal was a total pleasure both physically and vocally. Poor sad Roz, she may have been the office bitch but you couldn’t help feeling sorry for the poor soul, hopelessly in love with the boss totally off his radar, her solo numbers were a complete hoot, and we all loved her saucy moments. Franklin Hart Jnr, The Boss, made our skin crawl, what a hateful man and his comic timing was spot on making us all cringe and giggle all at the same time.
The girls were not unsupported in the battle against ‘The Boss’, Joe was sweet and we were all so happy when Violet said ‘yes’ and Dwayne and his cowboy boots partnered his Doralee in style. This show bounded across the Brewhouse stage with ultimate pizzazz and was a total joy…. The technical team did the production proud and also deserve a round of applause of their own…congratulation TAOS on a great production.
