How do you choose items from 50 years memories? There must have been lots of discussion before the show. A written musical does at least have lots of hooks to hang songs and dance to and a ready made script. A concert does not have these guidelines. I imagine the problem was not what to do but what to leave out. I have been visiting the company for several years now and could remember many of the sketches I have seen, which made an appearance in this concert – funny ones, sad ones, etc. etc. Well, the final choices seemed excellent from the audience’s comments. The show opened with all of the cast in a variety of costumes. Faces from years back and still performing, along with new and recent members. The Company is sure to go on and on enjoying performing.
How to link all of the items as there is no story line? Very cleverly. We were introduced to excellent comperes who moved us along through the years, often with suitable quips. Several memorable scenes which involved new or original performers. All did extremely well. Unfortunately, names were not in the programme for me to mention individually; however, no-one failed in their given role.
I particularly commend the grouping on stage and the choreography. There were also lovely super singers. “The Rose” was a lovely rendition. The Hornpipe dance with mops was very clever and the audience all clapped along. The Zulu dance was also super. The “Material Girl” all in pink – very effective, as was the ultraviolet scene.
Visiting the witch doctor was very funny, as was the cinema scene. I had seen it in a previous show and it was just as funny second time around. 50 years’ worth of course also meant there were lots of costumes available and experience on stage was obvious too.
The show also honoured past members: Eric Maggs who had a favourable character (the OAP Punk); Nick Keane (the producer’s husband) and author of shows. The whole show included everything we could imagine. Your Company has a great team feeling and no wonder the the faithful audience return again and again to see what you are giving them this time.
A lovely, uplifting evening we had. Congratulations to everyone.
