For many of us of a certain age, a trip back to 1964 would bring back many memories, not only of popular music and shows but also old favourite TV shows and world events.
Bridlington’s weekly summer journey opened with a medley of 21 songs from the year and, in fact, throughout the evening I was trying to spot the intro or guess who sang the songs as more and more recognisable tunes hit the spot. Most of these seemed well known to the large audience who sang along at times, knowing many of the words and maybe helping the cast a little! Not that everything was instantly remembered, such as Like A Child, originally performed by Julie Rogers as a follow up to The Wedding, which was also included.
The cast of 22, almost half of whom were men, gave us a range of group numbers, duets and trios and, complementing these, we were shown a number of clips from TV programmes and adverts of the day, again jogging the memories. There were also skits on Take Your Pick, Andy Pandy and a nice tribute to Dixon of Dock Green and if I was to pick a highlight it would be Paul Carrol’s interpretation of the Singing Postman’s Have You Got A Light Boy.
I would have liked to see a few more smiles from the singers who were enthusiastically accompanied by MD Geoff Allanach on keyboards and Dennis Major on percussion and I think that, as not all the audience was of the age I have mentioned, it might have been good to link numbers with a bit of background. The society always works hard on its costumes and this time was no exception and, when the finale selection of ever-popular Beatles hits was over, it was quite clear that the audience, who had come with high expectations, had not been disappointed.
