“13” is a story of a split family, with the principal character a youth forced by circumstances beyond his control to move from the Big City (in this case, New York) to a small town (in Indiana). Music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown from a book by Dan Ellish and Robert Horn.
Charlie Thould in the central role of Evan Goldman was on stage most of the time and so became the “narrator”. Charlie produced some good acting with an excellent American accent. An all round stage ability to dance, sing and act proved a wise choice for the role.
Grace Whippey as Patrice brought a maturity to the role, both in voice and expression. Dialogue was intelligently delivered and musicality good. A young actress to look out for in the future.
Alfie Ford gave a well controlled comedy performance as the character Archie. His comedy timing and interactions were good. Full of confidence and clearly understood the character.
Tom Kochalski as Brett oozed confidence, good vocals, his interpretation of the character was spot on, played with a finely-judged self-centredness, suitably obnoxious.
Erin Brant gave an assured performance as Lucy the friend who should not be trusted. Nice characterisation.
Ella Watkins was ideally cast as Kendra – her singing was strong. Good strong performance, good diction. She carried her character well and gave a very mature performance.
The company of young performers, of various ages, revelled in the rock music and moved the piece along at a good pace. All on stage clearly were enthusiastic and relished the opportunity to entertain a most appreciative audience.
The creative team really brought out the best in their young cast. Choreography was choreographed to the strengths of the cast and none of them were out of their depth.
This was a production to be proud of by all involved.
