13th February 2026

12:00 noon – Sunday 3 May – Alban Arena

St Albans Musical Theatre Company (SAMTC) is proud to announce that it will be the first regional amateur theatre company to present a relaxed performance of its upcoming production of The SpongeBob Musical.

The performance will take place at 12:00 noon on Sunday 3rd May at the Alban Arena.

A relaxed performance is specially designed to create a more inclusive and comfortable theatre environment. It is ideal for anyone who may benefit from a more flexible theatrical experience, including autistic audience members, people with learning disabilities, those with sensory sensitivities, families with young children, or anyone who prefers a less formal theatre setting.

The announcement is tied to SAMTC’s commitment and operational goals of educating the public in the operatic, dramatic and musical arts and furthering the development of public appreciation and taste in live theatre events.

The relaxed performance includes the following:

A pre-show ‘touch tour’ will be available for audience members who would like to explore the set ahead of the performance to feel more comfortable with the surroundings.

Everyone is welcome, whether they need these adjustments or simply prefer a more easy-going environment.

The Alban Arena is providing free Access Packs for our audience to use. These tote bags include ear defenders, sunglasses, and fidget toys, as well as a printed Access Booklet. This booklet serves as a guide to the show and the venue, allowing audience members to see photos of the stage and meet the characters before the curtain even goes up. These packs are available for every performance, and the Access Booklet can also be viewed on The Arena’s website and reserved in advance: https://everyonetheatres.com/wpcontent/uploads/2025/10/ACCESS-PACK-ALBAN-ARENA-GENERAL-.pdf

The SpongeBob Musical, the bold and imaginative stage show that brings Bikini Bottom to vibrant life. When a mysterious volcano threatens to destroy their undersea world, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the day. With original songs by legendary artists including Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At The Disco, and David Bowie, this energetic production is bursting with humour, heart, and high-energy spectacle.

Joyce Smith, Chair of St Albans Musical Theatre Company, said:
“We are absolutely thrilled to be leading the way by offering our very first relaxed performance. Making theatre accessible to as many people as possible is central to our company’s values, and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical is the perfect show to share with audiences who may not usually feel comfortable in a traditional theatre setting. We want everyone to feel the joy, energy and creativity of live performance.”

Dan Phillips, Director of the Production, added:
“This show is bursting with colour, music and heart, and a relaxed performance allows us to open that world to an even broader audience. Our cast and creative team are passionate about inclusivity, and we’re excited to adapt the production in ways that ensure every audience member has a positive and engaging experience.”
