SWEET CHARITY follows the misadventures of Charity Hope Valentine — an eternal optimist, hopeless romantic, and taxi dancer at the seedy Fandango Ballroom — who simply wants to be loved.
The women of the Fandango are tough, streetwise survivors navigating an exploitative, low wage nightlife world. Cynical about men and their own futures, they band together in fierce solidarity. Through their lives, the show sharply examines class divides, romantic disillusionment, and hard-won resilience — all delivered with Bob Fosse’s signature sexy, sardonic, and utterly iconic choreography that blends jazz precision with wry commentary.
A central thread running through the musical is the feeling of being trapped: emotionally in endless cycles of betrayal, socially and economically in dead-end jobs, and sometimes quite literally. This sense of repetition ripples beyond Charity to her fellow dancers and even some of the men, offering a bittersweet, distinctly 1960s commentary on working-class dreams, shattered illusions, and the daily grind of survival. Based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for Nights of Cabiria (written with Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano). Produced on Broadway by Fryer, Carr and Harris. Conceived, Staged and Choreographed by Bob Fosse.
PERFORMANCES 27 – 30 May 2026 @ 7:30pm, with a matinee on Saturday 30th May @ 2:30 pm, all at The Ship Theatre in Sevenoaks.
