Into the Woods

Into the Woods is a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine that intertwines beloved fairy tales with a darker twist. The story follows a Baker and his Wife, cursed with childlessness by a vengeful Witch, as they embark on a quest to gather magical items. Along the way, they encounter familiar characters—Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel—each pursuing their own wishes.

Act One ends with everyone seemingly achieving their dreams, but Act Two reveals the unforeseen consequences of those wishes. Themes of responsibility, loss, and community emerge as the characters face a vengeful Giant and the collapse of their happily-ever-afters. Ultimately, the musical explores the cost of desire and the importance of unity in overcoming life’s trials.
