Not a typical amateur membership society, UK Foundation for Dance is a registered charity (no. 1041011) and limited company (no. 2967865), formed in 1994, originally to rescue the 1,100-seat Royalty Theatre in London's Kingsway, although this project was happily achieved instead by Sadler's Wells as the present Peacock Theatre. UKFD managed Marylebone Dance Studio in London 1998-2017, produced dance shows and tours, managed artists and companies, provided dance manager training and delivered events including the first Big Dance on Trafalgar Square (Mayor of London & BBC1 TV, 2006), ROH new:currents seasons (Royal Opera House, 2004-6) and galas at New London Theatre, Sadler's Wells and New Victoria Theatre Woking. Relocated in 2008 from London to Scarborough, UKFD now concentrates on local community music and theatre, often in partnership with local festivals, dance schools, societies or choirs, including several amateur musicals: CABARET (2011), MACK & MABEL (2013), CALAMITY JANE (2014), RUDDIGORE (2017), KISS ME, KATE (2018), PAL JOEY (2019) and MR CINDERS (2021) in Scarborough. UKFD tends to pick shows that are less frequently presented, in order to complement existing provision in and around Scarborough.
