Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) was formed in 1999, bringing together two long-standing local groups: the Henfield Players (founded in 1929) and the Henfield Choral & Operatic Society, whose roots go back as far as 1886. Between them, they built a proud tradition of plays, musicals, opera and concerts – even reaching the finals of the Sussex Drama Festival and performing at Glyndebourne.

The opening of the village’s new hall in 1974 (now The Henfield Hall) gave the societies a permanent home with a proper stage and larger audiences, and joint productions became increasingly common. HTC became a registered charity in 2004 and today produces a wide range of shows, workshops and events for the enjoyment of both members and the wider community.

Henfield is a growing village with a strong community spirit, and HTC continues to enjoy great audience support. Like many amateur companies, rising costs mean funding can be a challenge, so we rely on fundraising, sponsorship and a lot of goodwill to keep putting on the ambitious productions our audiences love.

With around 110 members plus a thriving Theatre School for youth, HTC may be amateur in name, but standards are high. We regularly win theatre awards - the most recent being for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. Alongside performers, we’re lucky to have talented directors, designers, musicians, technicians and a brilliant behind-the-scenes team who make everything happen.

Whether you want to be on stage, backstage, or anywhere in between, we’re always delighted to welcome new members. If you fancy getting involved in creating theatre for your community, get in touch – it’s hard work at times, but always great fun!
