The informal and unfussy environment selected for the staging of this musical comedy featuring characters from C M Schulz’s famous “Peanuts” comic strip was ideal, since there were no distractions to diminish the intensity or importance of the thoughts and feelings which the players were endeavouring to convey. Premiered in 1967, the content of this play presents an amazing insight into the marvellous ways in which the minds of young people operate and how they formulate their opinions. Exceptionally well-cast, superb characterisation was delivered by all the players. James Coleman (as Charlie Brown) reminded us of the difficulties children experience through shyness and the sense of insecurity that can prevail when being required to make even apparently simple decisions. Heather Walker (as Sally Brown) showed just how badly a young person’s mental state could be affected by a twisted jump (skipping) rope! Sarah Garner (as Lucy van Pelt) was excellent at demonstrating her superior knowledge acquired through age to substantiate her claim that snow does not fall - it comes up through the ground! Stephen Blanchard (as Linus van Pelt) only needed his comfort blanket to make him feel secure. Jim Burrows (as Schroeder) gave an amazing performance as a young boy whose life was dominated by music. Aubrey Harris (as Snoopy) proved beyond doubt that in an emotional contest – even without the power of speech – a dog will always win. The fine acting talent on display, combined with strong vocal skills, resulted in a most entertaining and enjoyable performance. Very impressive!
