Obviously when you go and see a show written by Mel Brooks its only to be expected its going to be funny, risqué and somewhat zany however, Young Frankenstein is also totally bonkers in every sense. The story line really shouldn’t work and neither should the characterisations of the principals but it did, everyone who saw it must surely have enjoyed the performance which on the night I attended resulted in a well deserved standing ovation.
I love watching the talented Matt Barnard who gave an outstanding performance as Dr Frederick Frankenstein, he was really funny when correcting the mispronunciation of his surname. We saw different sides to his character when interacting with his ditsy lab assistant Inga, played by Megan White who I feel had taken a few of her mannerisms from Marilyne Monroe and when with his high maintenance fiancé Elizabeth played by Charley Turner. Charley’s comedic delivery of ‘Please Don’t Touch Me’ was absolutely fantastic she and Matt, of course, supported by the large ensemble. Helen Gibbs was wonderful as Frau Blucher the cryptic housekeeper. Helen always brings her wealth of experience to every role, ‘He Was My Boyfriend’ was brilliant. Dean Wilson was super imposing as the hilarious Monster. His costumes and make up were both spot on and impressive. Inspector Kemp was played by Steve Hayes and Domenic Wilson was The Hermit and Katherine Allen was the final person to make up the impressive principal cast. Special mention must go to Katherine for your portrayal of Igor that somewhat stole the show for me, totally brilliant in every respect. The principals were backed by a strong, capable ensemble of nearly thirty, bringing the chorus numbers and stylised choreography in ‘Hang Him Til He’s Dead’ to life (please excuse the contradiction). I especially enjoyed ‘Putting On The Ritz’ and also the finale, ‘Together Again’.
The scenery was simple yet effective; despite some challenges with changing the boards on the night I attended, the cast adapted seamlessly. Lighting effects enhanced the show, and both make up and fantastic costumes were impressive. I should also like to mention all those working tirelessly behind the scenes who endeavour to keep the show running smoothly. Congratulations to all for an entertaining production. The creative team demonstrated impressive innovation and efficiency—well done to Ian Page, Chris Davis and Jayne Bryan working as a new STC team for this production.
