Yeoman of the Guard is set at The Tower of London, a story of forbidden romances and unrequited love. Not one of the easier of G and S Operettas to understand, but Kentish Opera’s production at the Stag Theatre this week was an exceptional piece of theatre. Stephen Anthony Brown's direction gave us a sumptuous staging, and along with Robyn Sevastos conducting a huge orchestra, Carol Stevenson as costume design, and Paul Lazell as set Designer one has a recipe for success.

The cast of this Yeoman was chosen for their professionalism and that certainly shone through. Stephen Brown (Col Fairfax), Giles Davis (Jack Point) exceptionally funny, Louisa Alice-Rose (Phoebe), Rosie Ash (Dame Carruthers), Graham Stone (Wilfred Shadbolt), Stephanie Kemball (Elsie), Olivia Greenwell (Kate), Ian Belsey (Sgt Merryl) and, making his debut as Leonard Merryl, Daniel Breakwell. Backed up by Peter Crockford, Andy Boon, Angus Morton and Tim Holden and the incredible Kentish Opera chorus. Kentish Opera always give us Grand Opera, but this G&S was a pleasant change and of course has dialogue and proves that Kentish Opera can turn their hand to all musical theatre…with ease. I always look forward to visiting Kentish Opera, I know I will be entertained to a high standard of Opera. Keep up the good work, at keeping opera and operetta alive in my area.
