Whilst those familiar with the work of Terry Pratchett revelled in the extensive amount of humour this play contains from the outset, those in the audience who were not, took a while to comprehend the hilarious and witty style of the author. Well cast, there were excellent performances from the principals. Georgina Jellicoe (as Granny Weatherwax) presented her knowledge and experience of witchcraft most convincingly. Suzanne Webb (as Nanny Ogg) well demonstrated her considerable comedic talent and stage presence. Lucy Kelley (as Magrat Garlick) played the youngest and newest member of the coven, and whilst she may have had much to learn about being a witch and falling love, she delivered a most capable performance in this role. Malcolm Jessop (as The Fool) acquitted himself admirably as being of poor humour but capable of deep thoughts and feelings. Pratchett draws extensively on the Bard’s life and work in this play and James Coleman (as Duke Felmet) produced a really classic Shakespearian style performance as a man being driven insane by the memory of his having committed murder. Pippa Stubbs (as Duchess Felmet) presented herself as a wicked controlling woman; her strong performance included a most realistic stage collapse having been struck on the back of her head! This highly entertaining production was an excellent example of teamwork with good performances from those in supporting roles. The stage crew were very efficient in carrying out the many set changes and their delivery of special sound and lighting effects was accurately timed. Although a comedy it is a thought provoking play from ‘WITCH’ there is much to learn. Well done everyone.
