Silchester Players production of Wyrd Sisters illustrated the depth and breadth of this very talented society. Director Keith Graham and his cast brought out the idiosyncrasies of this play adapted by Stephen Briggs from the book by Terry Pratchett from the Discworld series. The play uses some of the aspects of Shakespeare’s Macbeth but rearranges them in Pratchett’s own particular style. The play features three witches: two very senior members Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and the junior witch Magrat Garlick who firmly believes in occult jewellery, covens, and bubbling cauldrons, much to the annoyance of the older two. Whilst the play reflects ideas from Shakespeare it puts a different complexion on the ghost, the wicked duke and duchess, the strolling players and a land in moral danger and peril.
There is always a welcoming buzz and enthusiastic patrons at the Player’s productions. The production was enjoyed by all age groups in the audience. The director and his cast tackled both the script and the concept of the play. Good comic timing was to be found not just between the three witches but also between the Duke and Duchess and those they interacted with. The play maintained a good pace throughout.
This challenging production with its magic tricks was a great success and all involved should be very proud of their production.
