Women Only was the first of two one‑act plays. The play tells the story of Ruth revealing some long‑held family secrets to Laura.

The set was simple: two chairs, a drinks cabinet at the back, and enough space for the two performers to move comfortably.

Jessica Laws‑Robinson played Laura, and Sally Laws‑Robinson played Ruth. Both had good diction, and the dialogue was clear throughout. I enjoyed how Sally often had a smile on her face, showing the audience how much, she relished taking her time in revealing the family secrets to Laura. There were moments when Jessica paused thoughtfully, showing Laura processing the information she was being given. At first, I did feel that Laura could have shown a little more shock when she first learned the truth about her dad.

Both characters drank quite a lot over the course of the play; however, their mannerisms didn’t change much, even after the fifth drink.

Jessica and Sally demonstrated strong comic timing and had good chemistry on stage.

This was an enjoyable play with solid performances.

Thank you to the always hospitable members of the Sadleir Drama Club, and the fish and chips were as lovely as always.
