This Society never pretends to be what it isn’t but, what it does do, is always provide an evening of enjoyable singing and entertainment and this evening certainly put me in the mood for Christmas.
The programme comprised entirely of Christmas songs, Carols, Poetry and readings both comedic and serious. Some of the carols were not the usual, well known settings and I particularly enjoyed ‘Amazing Grace’ which was intertwined with Pacabel’s Canon in D dating back to 1772, and Bethlehem Lullaby which was sung to the tune of the old Coventry Carol. The other, more well known Carols were all sung with their appropriate descants and it was most enjoyable to hear the harmonies of the voices whilst the audience were allowed to join in to their hearts content.
We had the usual Christmas Quiz, which everyone enjoys and, as always the evening was compered by John Mason who must spend many hours at the computer researching the background facts to the programme and making his introductions most informative and enjoyable.
The singing was expertly accompanied by Phil Walsh and Mark Bolland
