I was very warmly received by Alex Bass, the Chairman of this talented group and Vicky Tearle, the Director. This play is a modern’ laugh a minute’ comedy, hilarious throughout and verging on slapstick during the second act. There was a large audience in attendance which really appreciated the fast moving action of the plot. It was good to see this farce so well supported.

The play took place on the occasion of the sudden death of a well known comedian, Dave and the reactions of his widow, friends and colleagues. There were six actors in the cast most of whom were on stage for a considerable time. David Thompson, as Harvey Barrett, Dave’s scriptwriter, really acted out this role superbly, playing the pompous, untidy ,upright character with immense flair. He was the perfect foil for his wife, Vi, played by Brenda White-Robinson, who hid a guilty secret whilst portraying the supportive wife. Rosemary Sturgiss, as Jane Prewitt, truly flounced around the stage, trying to take charge of arrangements for the funeral of Dave. Jane also hid a guilty secret. Her husband, Kevin, Dave’s agent, played by Keith Sippitt, was shown to be a very weak, easily manipulated character and Keith did this well. Laura Thursby, the widow of Dave, played by Hayley Favell, presented as a glamorous and rather ‘society’ type concerning herself with the detailed funeral arrangements and her guests at the wake.

The surprise was the appearance of Dave’s first wife, Kay from Cromer, whose existence had been unknown to the rest of the group. Kathryn Cavender was great in this role with a strong local accent and some wonderful facial expressions. Indeed, all the cast added to this high spirited romp with great facial expressions which gave added impetus to this fast moving comedy. In fact, the casting for this play was clever and certainly played to each actor’s skills and abilities. The audience were left wondering at Dave’s secret life and did any of his friends and colleagues really know him ?

The setting was the living room of Dave’s house and, apart from a few props, especially the coffin, involved minimal changes. There was a lovely set, well designed and constructed and the props, sound and lighting were really effective.. Cast members sourced their own costumes and all were very appropriate to the character played, so good choices. Stage Managers, Di-onne Holloway and Lucy Szmyr did a sterling job in the background.

Vicky Tearle, as Director did an amazing job in pulling this production together. Well done !

I had the chance to talk with the cast at the end and it was obvious how much they had all enjoyed both the rehearsals and the performances.

This production was a real credit to this group, providing excellent entertainment. I certainly enjoyed the play immensely and congratulate everyone involved in any way.
