The musical version of White Christmas is based on the ever familiar Paramount Picture telling the story of Captain Bob Wallace and Private Phil Davis, World War 2 ex-army buddies as they team up with a pair of sisters to put on a show in order to save a remote ski lodge fallen on hard times which they later discover is under the ownership of their former ex-army General. Christopher Morris and Andrew Rodger were perfectly cast as song and dance team Wallace and Davis. Chris delighted the audience with his rich baritone voice in the title song and when ‘counting his blessing instead of sheep’, and overall provided an outstanding performance as Wallace. This was skilfully matched by Andrew as the tap-dancing Davis proving ‘the best things happen while you’re dancing’. Both Julie Thomson and Shiranne Burns gave great performances as the singing Haynes ‘Sisters’, Betty and Judy. John McKenzie was every inch the retired General Waverly struggling with civilian life and was joined by Anne-Marie Simpson as his meddling housekeeper and one-time Broadway star Martha Watson. It was unfortunate that due to illness Charlotte Burnside was unable to play the part of Susan Waverly however Samantha Todd (aged 11) stepped forward and must be commended for her terrific performance with one weeks’ notice. All remaining principals performed to the usual high standard ably supported by an enthusiastic cast under the leadership and direction of the production team. This Christmas musical provided dance, laughter with a feast of popular Irvine Berlin numbers getting feet tapping and reminding us that the season of goodwill and peace is just around the corner.
