This is the perfect show for this time of year and for getting an audience in the mood for Christmas. The show has long been a favourite of anyone who loves the Hollywood Musical. CHAOS did not disappoint with their interpretation of the story.
The show was well cast with Adam Compton (Bob Wallace) and Richard Cope (Phil Davis) as the army pals awaiting discharge and entertaining the troops. The show then moves forward 10 years and the duo are successful entertainers who are persuaded to see the act of two sisters Liz Compton (Betty Haynes) and Salli Gage (Judy Haynes). Phil is immediately smitten with Judy but there is resistance from Bob towards Betty. By means of trickery all four arrive at the Columbia Inn in Vermont where the ex-General of the Division is trying and failing to make a profit. In true Hollywood style and amid various twists and turns and beautiful songs and dances it all ends happily especially when the General’s troops appear to support the show. The four leading performers were well supported by all the cast including Peter Goldsmith (General Waverly) and Kay Woodhouse (Martha the General’s concierge)
CHAOS is a long established society and numbers several families among its members. Hard working secretary Kay Woodhouse (Martha) and her two real life daughters playing sisters Betty and Judy must surely have set a record for a trio, performing ‘Falling Out of Love Can Be Fun.’ Talent abounds in the family with Mother/Grandmother Chairman Hilda Faulkner and we must not ignore that Bob was played by Betty’s husband Adam. A family affair in the best traditions of musical theatre. All talented performers giving 100% to this production.
Effective scenery, beautiful costumes, dances well choreographed and within the scope of the performers, a good orchestra, excellent voices and all the songs of the era performed with confidence and, for the audience, sheer enjoyment. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
