Having thoroughly enjoyed the West End premier not long after it opened, I was eagerly looking forward to the District 5 premier and I was certainly not disappointed. Derrick Pearce provided a strong powerful performance as ‘The Man’ contrasting well with Zoe McFadyen who was outstanding in her portrayal of Swallow in displaying the correct level of naivety with an absolute belief that ‘The Man’ really was Jesus. Paul O’Keane and Monica Jamieson were perfectly cast as Amos and Candy and performed ‘Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts’ with great attack. Eva Gilmour (10) and Jamie Prentice (8) were just right as Brat (girl) and Poor Baby (boy) who won the hearts of the audience through their drama and singing, consistently maintaining Southern American accents throughout. However, special mention must also be made of the other children who performed and sang with great enthusiasm in particular ‘When Children Rule the World’ and ‘No Matter What’. Gerry Jamieson made a fine sentimental old Boone with all remaining principals and townspeople providing dramatic support through their characterisation. Having been impressed with the West End production, the standard was maintained in this production and my congratulations must go to Ian Monteith-Mathie and Eleanor Mackay for providing music and drama direction to the highest standard and also to the entire cast for presenting an exceptional production.
