This Andrew Lloyd Webber piece, recently released for amateurs, is certainly not one of his better shows. However, North Staffs gave us a splendid production; well cast, well set, well acted and well sung, and with excellent direction. Costumes and set design all worked well too.
The musical direction was just right for the piece; and, although the show does not demand a lot of choreography, when it was needed it was well set and in keeping.
Lydia Hall was a moving and convincing Swallow, as were Samuel Horton and Emilia Bradon as her brother and sister Poor Baby and Brat. Gareth Ridge as The Man gave a strong and impressive performance. Sasha Tadman as Candy and Dean Lockett as Amos were well cast and performed well. Tony O’Rourke was menacing and convincing as the Snake Preacher – with an equally menacing snake!
All the other parts were equally impressive and the cast all gave excellent performances as the children and townspeople, to create a seemingly realistic and convincing picture of Louisiana in the 1950s.
Thank you all for your warm welcome and excellent hospitality. As always, North Staffs have come up with the goods.
