The musical is based on Compton MacKenzie’s funny and romantic novel set on the remote fictional Hebridean islands of Little and Great Todday in 1943 during wartime rationing.  Having all but run out of uisge beatha - the water of life, a cargo ship conveniently runs aground in the bay with a consignment of whisky triggering a range of colourful characters creating a series of highly amusing situations.  Ronnie Honey gave a great performance as Sergeant Major Odd whilst also displaying good clear vocals.  Sheila Rodgers was an excellent choice as the formidable and domineering ‘holier than thou’ Mrs Campbell, who connected well with Darren Tasker, her timid son George as his smitten girlfriend Catriona McLeod, ably played by Lauren Nimmo, attempts to prize him away from his domineering mother.  James Cassidy provided a strong central character portraying local businessman Joseph Macroon, planning strategies with Father Macallister (Eric Brown) to attain the consignment from the ship and then executing the wild plans with the assistance of the other principals.  Bob Clark provided a suitably officious Captain Wagett and together with his wife Dolly played by Carol Sutherland, led the home guard and the ladies chorus in the extremely well choreographed ‘Marching in Rhythm’ adding to the variety and enjoyment.  The Chorus was used to full potential complementing the frantic craziness led by all the principals.  This was a thoroughly enjoyable musical with great characterisation provided by all in the company.  Although the musical numbers were not well known, they were very lively, delivered confidently and blended into the story.  A great fun filled show!
