When We Are Married

Married on the same day in the same chapel, three couples meet to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary but the festivities are brought to a halt when they discover that the priest who conducted the ceremony was not licensed so they are not actually wed – have they been living in sin for 25 years? Horror of horrors!  After the initial shock the couples concerned gradually begin to overcome the social embarrassment and realise that this could mean they are free from the shackles of marriages which are not so happy. Home truths are dealt with, bullies made to receive retribution and the hen- pecked hilariously and most satisfyingly liberated.

No! This was too good to last. Further enquiries revealed that as a registrar was present at these marriages they were legal.

Written by J.B.Priestley, who was a keen observer of life and an avid people watcher, this play was first performed in London in 1938 and remains popular with audiences today. Brilliantly interpreted by every member of the very competent cast who displayed great characterisation and sensitively directed by Rosemary Gibson, who has a great eye for detail, this play was most pleasurable to watch and I was assured by players it was a joy for them to perform. A great deal of care had been taken over the furnishing of the set and the selection of costumes which were appropriate to the period. The tune of the unofficial anthem for Yorkshire – On Ilkley Moor baht ‘at -was used to introduce the performance and when played at the finale prompted a spontaneous hearty rendition from the audience.  

Congratulations to all who were involved in this production which was delivered to an exceedingly high standard.
