“What I did at school today” is a very funny comedy written by John Mee.  Set in a school the play revolves around scheming headmaster Clive Beasley who is only concerned with fundraising schemes and enhancing his CV. Then a new male supply teacher arrives on the scene which causes mayhem among the previously all-female staff and out of this confusion finally the truth about Clive’s fund raising schemes are brought out into the open.
This was a very enjoyable funny production directed by Finlay Robertson, who also found the time to play the very demanding role of Clive Beasley the headmaster of the school. The curtains opened to a very effective set which together with furnishings and props produced a good representation of the school staff room, so well done to the stage crew, set builders, props who along with sound and lighting produced a very good platform for the actors to work on. Finlay was very fortunate to have a number of very talented actors at his disposal, so I think it would be unfair to single out individual performances, as they all suited their roles and performed very well. The audience found themselves entertained by a number of very enjoyable extremely different characters skillfully created by the actors, and it was vital that they got these characters right for the play to be a success. The cast worked well together with no weak links, and on the whole their comic timing was good which is crucial in this type of production. Dialogue flowed easily at just the right speed for the greater part of the performance but there were a few occasions where a prompt had to be taken which did affect the flow of the play. However diction was excellent from all on stage, which is essential in this very wordy script meaning the action could be followed easily. Costumes were well thought out, suited the roles well and in some cases were very funny, they also enhanced the characters. The final result was that the company, were able to produce a very fine comedy, along with some embarrassing confusion, which provided an enjoyable entertaining evening for the audience to experience.
Well done and congratulations to all involved in this production and thank you for inviting me I had a very enjoyable evening. I look forward to seeing you for your next production.
