What About You?

”What about you?” is the latest production from Irchester Players. It is a unique and very original play. The plot is woven around a group of young adults living in 90’s Britain and explores issues in their society which are still very relevant today. The concept of the play was brilliant as it explored many difficult subjects, such as suicide and depression, homelessness, unemployment and several other issues. A team of members have together taken on the roles of writing, directing, designing and performing the play. I feel the play would have worked much better if there had been one director, as he or she would have seen the lack of structure and other negative issues.
“The Team” features Alice Dodds, Emily Spencer, Grace Baker-Brown, Jess Yates, Joby Blair, Tom Spencer, Poppy Beale and Megan Hooton. Overall the performances were very good and convincing. Some of the actors need to watch their intonation and diction, there was also a lot of talking over each other and at times the dialogue was very “stilted”. The audience was seated around the playing area, which was very effective. The set was very good and was moved and manipulated by the cast, though at times I felt there was a little too much movement going on. The sound quality was mostly very good throughout; the choice of music was excellent although it was sometimes a little too loud. The lighting was very good too, some highlighted blackouts, I think, would have added to some of the more poignant moments. The Irchester Players have been very brave in tackling such a difficult and innovative piece of theatre, so I must congratulate “The Team” for all their efforts and hard work with “What about you?” Well done to you all!
