I have to come clean up front and say that “West Side Story” is one of my favourites, if not my most favourite musicals. I have long and very fond memories of it though musical theatre career. So it was with much excited anticipation that I approached WBOS Youtheatre’s production – there is something even more special when the production features cast members who realistically portray characters of roughly their own ages. Emma Wetherall’s production had all of the right ingredients – superb characterisations, exciting and breath stopping choreography from Claire Flavell, some amazing solo voices, harmonies and ensemble singing under the tutelage of Musical Director Amber Seddon, a simple yet totally effective set supervised by Nick Smith as Stage Manager assisted by Kate Hemingborough and amazingly enviable endless enthusiasm from a group of highly talented and tireless performers. Unfortunately, and absolutely essentially, the sound quality failed to hit the mark – it would be unfair to list the numerous occasions when this occurred throughout the whole of the show, suffice to say mikes failing to work for dialogue and singing, cast unable to hear the music track and affecting the syncing of the vocals and choreography, vital sound effects not heard and inadequate sound balance. Despite all of these setbacks, the cast gainfully battled through, and the forgiving and appreciative audience were treated to some flashes of brilliance and talent. Oliver Dean as Tony sang his heart out and demonstrated an amazing vocal range, equally Lola Wooldrige as Maria, had a delightful voice and marvellous characterisation and their balcony scene was very moving. Honor Whitehouse as Anita, showed all the feistiness that the character demands and threw herself wholeheartedly into ‘America’
Despite all the technical set backs this amazing team could not be faulted for their enthusiasm and acting talent – the animosity between the Jets and the Sharks was electric led by Melvin Amah’s Riff, and Freddie Wetherall’s Bernardo, all ably supported by their gang members.
Many congratulations to everyone at WBOS Youtheatre and my most sincere thanks for your kind invitation and warm welcome and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
