Just before the lights dimmed on the Newcastle upon Tyne Musical Theatre Company’s version of West Side Story, senior members of the Presidents party were comparing notes on other versions they had seen, especially what the winning formula was. The consensus was that the chemistry between the two principle characters was the key. And chemistry we got, in spades. Conveniently, the night I went, we were in the middle of a heatwave. But far from being uncomfortable, this only added to the atmosphere via the set, the lighting, the music and the performances. You felt as if you were there in 1950s gangland New York. But this was no nostalgia trip – the production was relevant, contemporary and fresh – the company didn’t just perform, they breathed life and feeling into the story. Even the slang was perfectly comprehensible and in no way archaic. The whole cast were superb. I had to keep reminding myself that these were amateurs, portraying diverse characters with not a hint of showbiz. The company could dance (well done choreographer Sandra Laidler and dance captain Chantal Riley), sing, act and project. But the two main principals (Jamie Douglass’ 'Tony' and Nikki Cunningham’s 'Maria') were outstanding both as individuals and as an electrifying couple charged with emotion and chemistry. And there wasn’t a number that felt superfluous, even the more obscure, less well-known titles. The orchestra, led by MD Malcolm Moffat, was impeccable and blended perfectly into the production. The setting was apt with fixed scenery that was adaptable, appropriate and well managed. And the audience were moved, many to tears. This is a company at the top of its game and that lives up to the challenges of this prestigious venue. Never mind the film version, this production shows what a good show this is in the hands of a great company.
