Bernstein, Laurents and Sondheim teamed up to create this timeless classic 'West Side Story'. The show never dates and surely must still be one of the most popular musicals and love stories of all time. The theme of love crossing boundaries still touches audiences and the consequences of hatred are all too real in our world today.

Once again Stoke Youth approached this show with a maturity way beyond the years of those involved. Warring street gangs, killings, sex and abuse are themes not to be taken on lightly but they were handled sensitively and with shocking realism. Well done to the production team and the actors.

The set, though simple, created the idea of the streets the Jets and the Sharks called home and the lighting helped add to the mood and atmosphere of the various scenes. Costumes were carefully chosen although I was intrigued by Anita's almost 'modest' attire which contrasted with the usual image of the character.

I felt safe in the hands of a strong set of principals who brought charisma, charm and at times danger to the stage. Maya Tudor, as Maria, was simply delightful, bringing youth and playfulness to the character but then contrasting that at the end with her highly emotional scene after Tony's death. Ben Durham, as action, stood out among the Jets with great characterisation, stage presence and strong vocals. I loved Georgia Redman's performance of Anybody's, the perfect tom boy amongst the gang she so wanted to be part of.

The choreography conjured up images of the original film and was well executed. Oh to have that many dancing young men in all our shows! The Officer Krupke number was definitely one of the highlights (amongst many) brilliantly staged and executed. Other special moments included the numbers 'I feel Pretty' and 'America'. The girls, although taking a bit of a back seat to the men in this musical really shone through in these numbers.

I have always enjoyed this show and Stoke Youth have increased my love for it with a great production. Well done and congratulations to all involved.
