I remember the time when West Side Story was first produced and I have been to see performances many times. I was intrigued to see what Manx Operatic Society would make of this wonderful show and I am pleased to say that it was as good, if not better, than any production  I have seen. The show commenced with an empty stage with evocative lighting effects which created an atmosphere that immediately drew us into the mood of the piece, accompanied by a rousing overture. As each scene unfolded we experienced an emotional roller coaster. The excellent orchestra under the baton of  Conductor, Martin Heywood, who obviously knows this particular show well,  brought out the best from the experienced musicians and Musical Director, David Holland has ensured excellent performances from all on stage.  Anthony Williams, Director/Choreographer has created some innovative routines for the ensemble. The dramatic, physically demanding fight scenes were exciting and convincing.

Anthony Williams and Sarah Holland, Assistant Director, show their experience in keeping the pace at just the right tempo but I am sure they will agree that they have some splendid talent with whom to work. Set and props were just what were required and together with excellent sound and lighting the actors were provided with a fantastic area in which to perform. I am reluctant to pick out any particular performance as I was unable to find any weak link but it would be remiss of me not to mention the two main roles.  Saroja-Lily Ratnavel as Maria and Simon Lynch as Tony were ideal as the ill fated lovers.  Beautiful, emotive performances from both had many of the audience in tears, myself included.  I must congratulate the backstage crew as set changes were seamless thus enabling the show to continue without any awkward pause. This is yet another great success for an outstanding company which proves, yet again, how narrow is the gap between Professional and  Amateur.  Many thanks for a memorable night of Theatre.
