Wombwell and District Operatic Society are the be congratulated on their latest offering, West End Comes North. The show contained songs from current west end and touring shows, and was a well thought out programme. From classic musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera and Chess to the more contemporary & Juliet and Six, there was something for everyone of all ages to enjoy. It was also nice to hear songs from shows that I have not had the pleasure to see yet such as, If You Knew My Story from Brightstar, performed by Keira Hardy.
Everyone on stage appeared to be enjoying themselfs, as the casts smiles were infectious, which allowed us, the audience to smile along with them. There were some great performances, Chris Wakeford and Ann Wakeford treated us to their sublime vocals yet again as they performed Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon. What I like about my visits to Wombwell, are the opportunities it gives it's younger members. In this show the youngsters of the society were able to shine and gave very good performances from shows such as Everybody's Talking About Jamie, Matilda and Mamma Mia. The future of this well established society is in good hands with the young talent coming up the ranks. The performance of the night for me, came from Josephine Owen as she performed As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard. Josephine managed to capture the loneliness, the insecurity and the optimism that is required to perform this number. A mesmerising performance.
The stage isn't the biggest, but great care and attention had been put into using the space available. The costumes were well thought out and complimented the numbers that were being performed. Thank you, Wombwell for another great concert, here's to The Addams Family (click, click)
