It was a pleasure to visit our new members to District 3 and welcome Stagecoach Washington and Chester le Street to NODA North. I had the privilege of seeing the Sunday 4pm cast perform and what a performance it was from this young cast aged from 6 to 15 years old and I’m sure the other casts were equally good.
“We Will Rock You” uses the music of Queen to tell a story set in the future where music, other than that which is computer generated, is banned and how a group of “Bohemians” try to save Rock and Roll. The production values for the entire show were of a high standard, the lighting design and sound quality were excellent, costumes were appropriate for the piece and really enhanced the production.
Every performer looked confident and had an opportunity to shine, and their individual personalities were evident especially in the “Bohemian” scenes. The singing was good in the full company numbers and also by the principals. The Teen Queens, Lizzie, Lana, Ebony and Alexis in “Somebody to love” had super vocals and good characterisation. I also enjoyed the soloists in “No One but You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”, you all did a great job and made the most of your moment! The choreography was confidently carried out, created lots of good visuals and suited the numbers and the performers. I have to admit the group of young guys “air guitaring” during “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a highlight for me, their joy was palpable,
The show had a very strong principal line up, each one of them gave it their all and gave performances to be proud of. As the rebel “Buddy”, Henry’s vocals were good and he portrayed a character the audience could warm to. The “Iplanet” leaders “Killer Queen” and “Khashoggi” were played by Ewan and Jayden, their characterisations were so good, the dominating leader and their puppet of a commander showing sass and attitude throughout as well as strong vocal ability. The rebels “Brit” and “Oz” were played by Frazer and Amy, they worked really well together and had the audience in the palm of their hands during “I Want it All”, great work from these two. In the lead roles of “Galileo” and “Scaramouch”, Edward and Scarlett were excellent, Edward had confident delivery and showed performance maturity leading the show and Scarlet was sassy, had super comic delivery and great vocals. Together these two young performers had several numbers which were excellently delivered, they acted well with good accents and confidently led the show.
This was a confident, joyous production and the audience were very well entertained which was evident by the raptuous applause. Congratulations to everyone involved and I look forward to seeing whatever comes next for you all.
