Horwich Amateur Theatre Youth Section perform We Will Rock You Young@part which is a juke box musical based on the songs of Queen, adapted by Marc Tumminelli, originally choreographed by Arleen Phillips & written by Ben Elton. A young group of Bohemians want free exchange of thought, fashion and to be able to play live music and the journey they go through to get it. Matthew Kellie takes on the role as Director and is assisted by Natalie Beaumont who was also choreographer the duo put the cast of 16 through their paces. I loved the dance moves in ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ The stage was used well and the cast looked to be having a blast. I was confused at Scaramouche and Galileo being included in the Number ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ sung by Killer Queen (as they were on the run from her)?
A composite set decorated in Graffiti and giving a disused feel and a truck for the Hard Rock Café which was brought on and off and easily managed by the cast. Lighting and Sound were by Ben Holden & Ashley Foster. Costumes (uncredited) were in keeping and hair and make-up by Ursula Greenhalgh complemented the characters. Musical Director was George Baldwin who had some iconic songs to teach them.
The Chorus of Gaga kids, Teen Queens, Super Yuppies, Guards and Bohemians had some strong actors and singers who were Thomas Bramall, Amelie Burrill, Mia Day, Grace Anais, Rihanna Moray, Connie Upton, Rubie-Elizabeth Ward, Annabelle Whitter and Madison Young. This chorus mostly had great stage presence, especially the girl (uncredited) playing P Diddy. The end song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ where the chorus had their moment to sing a few bars was lovely and it was a great ending to finish with Galileo being the only one on stage singing the endline ‘Nothing Really Matters To Me’
The cast were Edward Hesketh playing Buddy, the fierce Killer Queen was played by Ruby Charnock, Amber Maria playing Brit and Oz was played by Ebony Williams. Great energy Ebony and lovely rendition of ‘Only The Good Die Young’ Some strong dance moves too.
Ben Brooks played the suited Khashoggi who liked to wear his sunglasses indoors much to the annoyance of The Killer Queen - reminded me of the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant - he had some great comic lines to deliver.
Seb Holbert as Galileo and Eadie Gosling as Scaramouche was great casting and they had great chemistry - their voices on point too and blending well. Galileo is the reluctant hero knowing he has a job to do and is guided by strange visions. Scaramouche the odd one out also looking for something, maybe to belong? A strange couple brought together - well done on their mature performance!
Congratulations to Cast, Crew and Committee on your production – it’s lovely to see the future generation is in good hands with great support.
Thank you from my guest Clarice and I for your hospitality.
