We Will Rock You

We Will Rock You is a high-energy musical featuring the iconic songs of Queen. Set in a futuristic world where individuality, live music and original thought have been outlawed by the all-powerful Globalsoft Corporation, the story follows Galileo and Scaramouche as they join a group of Bohemians in a quest to rediscover rock music and restore freedom of expression. Packed with well-known Queen hits, humour and heart, it is a show that celebrates being yourself and the enduring power of music.

Stagecoach South Tyneside & Gateshead's Further Stages production captured the spirit of the show brilliantly. Although the set was relatively simple, consisting of scaffolding, stairs and platforms, it was incredibly effective. It created interest and character, provided varying levels and, most importantly, gave the cast ample space to perform the energetic choreography while ensuring everyone remained visible throughout.

The lighting design enhanced the production beautifully, creating atmosphere and supporting the storytelling. The addition of fireworks and special effects elevated key moments and helped bring the whole production together, making for an exciting theatrical experience.

It was immediately clear that the cast and creative team had worked exceptionally hard together. The production flowed seamlessly, and every performer looked confident, committed and professional on stage.

Congratulations to the creative team, Catherine Hymers, Abigail Lawson and Daisy Hymers. Your dedication and hard work shone through in every aspect of the performance. What was particularly lovely to see was the genuine enjoyment on the faces of every young performer. It was also wonderful that every member of the cast had their own opportunity to shine, with moments that showcased everyone’s talents while ensuring everyone felt included.

The ensemble should be incredibly proud of themselves. Their vocals were strong, choreography well-rehearsed and characterisation consistent throughout. Their reactions and commitment helped tell the story effectively, creating a believable world and supporting the principal cast at every turn. Well done to everyone involved.

The principal cast was exceptionally strong, delivering performances with vocal and acting abilities well beyond their years.

Galileo, played by Lailah, gave a confident and energetic performance, full of enthusiasm and excellent reactions throughout. She led the story with assurance and was a very engaging central character.

Scaramouche, played by Isabelle, delivered outstanding vocals, complimented by skilful, natural acting. Isabelle is certainly one to watch for the future.

Killer Queen, portrayed by Lewis, offered a fresh interpretation of this iconic role. It was a confident performance that demonstrated strong stage presence and character throughout.

Khashoggi, played by Freddie, brought an enjoyable touch of comedy to what can often be a very dark character, creating a well-balanced and entertaining performance.

Oz, played by Ella, burst onto the stage with boundless energy and charisma, while Brit, played by Orla, impressed with excellent vocals alongside equally strong acting and dance ability. Orla proved herself to be a genuine triple threat, and together they made a terrific partnership.

Finally, but by no means least, Buddy, played by Kyra, opened the show with confidence and maintained that throughout, particularly bringing light-hearted comedy to the memorable "Video Tape" scene. It was a thoroughly enjoyable performance.

Overall, this was a hugely enjoyable production performed with passion, commitment and obvious teamwork. My only disappointment was that I wasn't watching the full-length version, as this talented company certainly left me wanting more.

Congratulations to everyone involved on an excellent production. You should all be incredibly proud of what you achieved.
