We Will Rock You is the famous musical written by Ben Elton using the music of Queen.
Annabel Clarke really approached this show from a creative point of view. It was refreshing to see less set and more space for the songs and performers. This allowed the performers, choreographers, and vocals to shine.
Tom Nichol is a talented Musical Director, and he did a superb job with the music. The band was tight and sounded perfect. Ylana Schafer-Thompson had clearly worked hard on the vocals and harmonies — good job.
Chelsea Clarke, as always, made every song feel distinct, and the choreography was dynamic and on point.
The lead, Galileo, was played by Lewis Clarke. His voice was the best I have heard in this role; he had the grit needed for such a demanding sing. His characterisation — the stuttering confusion — was exactly right. Opposite him, in the role of Scaramouche, was Jordan Marino. From the moment she started singing, you knew she was in control, tackling some of the most difficult songs ever written. She had an incredible voice, and her characterisation of Scaramouche was spot on.
Katie Milward played Killer Queen. She had a powerful and impressive voice and made the most of her songs. At times, I think she could have planted her feet more to project even greater power. Ed Smith as Khashoggi was excellent — his voice and character were incredible. Every movement was deliberate and controlled, and when he sang, he kept his accent, which is difficult. Really good job, Ed.
The duo of Britney and Oz were played by Jordan Clarke and Chloe Schofield. They had great chemistry on stage and came across well. Their voices were strong and harmonised beautifully.
Josh Clarke played Buddy — a great part, played well. I loved his accent and his hippy characterisation.
The set was well thought out. The video wall ensured the audience always knew where each scene was set, and it kept the pace quick. It also gave the performers the full stage to use, allowing the choreography to fill the space effectively.
Will Leete is SPADS’ secret weapon. Sound is the one element that can make or break a show, and this production was balanced beautifully between band and performers. The lighting was also creative and clever — the effect used for the capture of the Bohemians was well executed, and during the musical numbers the lighting made each song feel like a concert, exactly as it should.
Will and Peter made me feel very welcome, and I appreciated the backstage tour. It makes what SPADS achieve on stage even more impressive.
