We Will Rock You follows the story of a rebellious group of young outsiders who fight to bring real rock music back to a future dystopian world. Set 300 years from now, on the oppressive iPlanet, where the Globalsoft Corporation has banned musical instruments and individuality, two misfits, Galileo and Scaramouche, join the underground Bohemians to rediscover lost rock legends and restore freedom through music.
Directed by Mark Walker, Corby Amateur Theatrical Society’s production of We Will Rock You delivered a thoroughly entertaining evening packed with energy, humour, and heart. The large ensemble poured passion into every moment, showcasing a genuine love for musical theatre.
Daniel Fortune’s Galileo impressed with a remarkably versatile vocal range, effortlessly navigating Queen’s demanding score and commanding the stage with confidence. Kate Mann’s Scaramouche matched him beat for beat, bringing attitude, wit and sass, vocally challenging Daniel in their musical numbers. Nathan Stroud’s portrayal of Brit was rebellious and complemented Katie Procter as Oz. Katie’s performance of No One But You was heartfelt and beautifully delivered. Martin Brown as Buddy provided moments of humour, representing the voice of the bohemians. Not only did Ashleigh Hallam play Killer Queen, she had killer vocals! Ashleigh was commanding and demanding, contrasting well with Jonny Lindsay’s slick and sharp portrayal of Khashoggi.
Under Barbara Hockey’s musical direction, the cast delivered the musical numbers with confidence, supported by harmony vocalists Adele Jamookeeah, Heidi Coleman and Karen Morgan, whose tight harmonies provided a blended vocal layer in company numbers. The entire production was supported by a talented live band, bringing an electric, authentic energy to Queen’s iconic score.
Sheena Brown’s choreography was dynamic and cleverly tailored to the varied abilities and styles within the cast. From the regimented Ga Ga Kids to the free‑spirited Bohemians, each group had distinct movement which supported the storytelling.
The multi-level staging was used to great effect, creating smooth transitions and fluidity, enabling scenes to move seamlessly and providing extra space for the large company. Scene changes were quick and efficient, keeping the pace flowing. The props were thoughtfully chosen to enhance characterisation such as Killer Queen’s staff radiating authority and status, while Khashoggi’s stun device added a sharp comedic edge to his interrogations/torture. The costumes tied everything together with clear visual definition between groups and scenes, helping the audience instantly understand each character’s place in the story.
The lighting was dynamic and highly effective, shifting seamlessly to reflect the changing scenes and moods of the musical. A particularly clever touch was the laser‑cage effect used to imprison the Bohemians, adding a striking visual moment. The screen graphics further enhanced the storytelling, offering captivating imagery that deepened the audience’s engagement. The microphone quality was generally clear, though at times the harmony singers overpowered the leads - a minor balance issue which could have been easily resolved. The blend between vocalists and band, however, was excellent.
Corby Amateur Theatrical Society’s We Will Rock You was a hit with the audience and has left Queen’s songs echoing in my head ever since. Everyone on stage looked like they were having the time of their lives, giving everything to deliver a vibrant, high‑energy night of theatre. A thoroughly entertaining production from start to finish.
