We Will Rock You is a vibrant and imaginative jukebox musical that celebrates the legendary music of Queen, with its story shaped by writer Ben Elton. The show first burst onto the stage in Londons West End at the Dominion Theatre on 14 May 2002, quickly growing into one of the theatres longest running and most distinctive productions. The idea for the musical began to take form during the mid nineteen nineties, when Queens manager Jim Beach started exploring possibilities for a stage production built entirely around the bands extraordinary catalogue. Early discussions leaned toward a biographical piece centred on the life of Freddie Mercury, yet the concept soon revealed itself to be too constrained to capture the expansive spirit of Queens music. Everything shifted in the year 2000 when Ben Elton joined the creative team and proposed an entirely new direction. Instead of a factual retelling, he envisioned a bold futuristic adventure inspired by dystopian storytelling and the high energy, reality bending ideas found in films such as The Matrix. Working closely with Brian May and Roger Taylor, Elton wove more than two dozen of Queens most iconic songs into a script that reached completion the following year.

The story is set far into the future in a world where originality, creativity and any form of musical expression have been strictly forbidden. Within this bleak society rises a rebellious group known as the Bohemians, determined to overthrow the faceless corporation that controls the planet and to restore the passion, freedom and spirit of true rock. Despite the darker undertones of its setting, the musical maintains a playful and witty personality, echoing the theatrical flair and joyous eccentricity that defined Queen. Since its debut, We Will Rock You has toured across six continents and, by the year 2022, had welcomed more than twenty million enthusiastic audience members into its bold and imaginative world.

Woodhouse Musical Theatre Company presented an electrifying and wonderfully dynamic production of We Will Rock You at The Lawrence Batley Theatre, bringing the music of Queen roaring to life with precision, commitment and unmistakable passion. From the very first moments, the production pulsed with energy and confidence, clearly delivered by a company fully devoted to the essence of Ben Eltons futuristic rock adventure.

Matt Ogden, in the role of Galileo, anchored the show with remarkable vocal power and an engaging stage presence that blended intensity with vulnerability. His partnership with Eleanor Stringer, who played Scaramouche, remained a standout throughout the evening. Eleanor matched him at every turn, delivering sharp wit, fearless humour and exceptional vocal strength, all wrapped in a spirited defiance that captured the heart of her character.

Lauren Botchway Clarke commanded the stage as Killer Queen, radiating both authority and wicked charm while singing with precision and control. Opposite her, Martin Stead gave a memorable performance as Khashoggi, combining excellent comic timing with impressive vocal work. Seeing him step out in front of the curtain rather than working behind the scenes was a pleasure, and he embraced every moment with enthusiasm.

Matthew Armitage filled the theatre with boundless humour and energy as Brit, while Lily England, portraying Oz, delivered one of the evenings most moving performances with her rendition of Only the Good Die Young. Her emotional depth and vocal confidence created a moment that lingered long after it ended.

Richard Sykes brought warmth, nostalgia and gentle humour to the role of Buddy, offering a heartfelt reminder of a world less overwhelmed by technology. Samantha J Armitage appeared briefly as the Teacher but left a meaningful impression, helping to establish the tone and pace in the early scenes with clarity and charm.

The Bohemians, Niove Armitage, Adam Moss, Ned Smith, Becky Sutcliffe, Cath Palmer, Sarah Taylor, Danny Jowett, Vic Marley and Louisa LeFevre, all delivered consistently strong performances. Each brought strong vocals and an infectious rebellious spirit, contributing to an ensemble that never faltered. The Ga Ga Girls, Francesca Preston, Toni Taylor, Paige Alexandra, Becky Widdop, Leah Stansfield and Emily Griffiths, added striking visual flair with polished choreography and unwavering precision.

The expanded ensemble, featuring a large and talented cast, which included Alexia Newton, Georgie Appleyard, Anne-Marie Senior, Helen Woodhead, Andy Bell, Isabella Courtney, Ian Broadbent, Kieran Palmer, William Broadbent, Lucy Crossley, Antonia Frampton, Nicci Cooney, Charlotte Wilson, Rachel McManus, Clare Wraight, Sarah Farrow, Eden Aliyu, Sarah Holmes, Gemma Bourke, Zoe LeFevre and Georgie Lindley filled the stage with vibrant character work, energetic movement and high quality singing that collectively elevated the production. Their combined presence created an atmosphere that was rich, colourful and full of life.

Director Neil Broadbent made inspired use of a video wall to broaden the visual storytelling, giving the production an impressive sense of scale and meticulous detail. Every transition and visual moment was delivered with clarity and purpose. Musical Director Keira Watson guided a superb band and ensured that the famed Queen sound was honoured with outstanding musicianship and vocal excellence that kept the audience completely immersed. Choreographers Lauren Thompson and Louisa LeFevre crafted routines that were intricate, stylish and confidently performed, clearly reflecting the dedication and preparation of the cast.

Costumes overseen by Sue Warmby and her team were bold, imaginative and visually striking, enriching the world of the musical and helping to define characters with flair and personality. Behind the scenes, Jon Hunt and the stage crew ensured that every set change was smooth and expertly timed, while James Clare and Jon Hudson delivered impressive sound and lighting that matched the high standards associated with The Lawrence Batley Theatre.

In every respect, Woodhouse Musical Theatre Companys production of We Will Rock You stood as a triumphant tribute to the music of Queen and the unforgettable thrill of live performance. With exceptional acting, remarkable musicality and a confident creative vision, the We Will Rock You offered an exhilarating experience that left the audience energised, uplifted and thoroughly entertained. My sincere thanks to all involved and to the warm welcome given to myself and my wife.
