As Assistant Representative for NODA, it is always a pleasure to return to this iconic 600 – seat venue and on this occasion the sense of anticipation was palpable. With an audience of over 400 creating a real buzz of expectancy, the atmosphere was set perfectly for West Cliff Performers’ production of We Will Rock You.

From the outset, the excellent live band, under the assured musical direction of Nik Graham, drove the show forward with energy and style. Front of House was smart and efficient, ensuring a warm welcome for patrons. The large and talented cast, ranging from 10 years old and above to adults, filled the stage with enthusiasm and commitment. The innovative use of the large interactive screen to portray scenes worked well and helped maintain the pace of this fast-moving production.

Vocally, the singing and harmonies were good. Adam Parkes as Galileo delivered a strong performance, matched well by Lauren Nolan’s Scaramouche; the two shared convincing chemistry, though due to a mic issue, I’m assuming, Scaramouche was a little quiet at times. Phoebe Wiggett’s Killer Queen character was delightfully over-the-top and confidently performed. Her side kick, Kashoggi, played really well by Helen Goffin ensured terrific contrast when these two characters were on stage together. Brit, played by Sam McCarthy and Oz, played by Sophie Waters created engaging characters, with Oz providing some superb vocal moments. Charlie Vaughan’s Buddy was a strong character portrayal with some terrific comic timing moments.

The entire cast demonstrated clear enjoyment and dedication, with plenty of talent evident on stage. The show was extremely well directed by Chris Bareham and Ashley Glander, with effective choreography from Sarah Smith and Nikki Heap complementing the action throughout. Production values were high, with props, make-up, wardrobe, sound and lighting all contributing to a polished and cohesive performance.

The audience clearly loved this show, with some members rising to their feet in appreciation. This was a fast-paced, very enjoyable production. Well done to all involved.
