This was a truly superb production of the recently released for amateur companies ‘We Will Rock You’.
The cast of 70 plus absolutely rocked the stage delivering the memorable hits from Queen with real conviction, style and verve. This huge ensemble made an immediate impact every time they entered filling the stage and executing the flawless, dynamic choreography with precision and attention to detail.
Every musical number is well known and this cast delivered stunning ensmble work both vocally, with powerful harmonies coming through, and in their high energy attitude to each number. The Ga Ga Kids got the production off to a stirring start with ‘Radio Ga Ga’ and from then on to the rousing final numbers ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’ which raised the roof of this huge theatre, the audience were completely stunned and captivated by this first class production.
The company is so fortunate in having an incredidbly talented group of principal performers. Colin Sutherland's Galileo was simply stunning. Powerful and emotive both vocally and in his portrayal of the somewhat bewildered, rebellious Galileo he absolutely lived the part. The young goth Scaramouche an outcast from her piers was played to perfection by Rebecca Drever. With a powerful singing voice and excellent comedic timing she appeared totally at ease in the part. These two main characters complemented each other with their fabulous singing paricularly ‘Under Pressure’ and the emotive ’Who Wants To Live Forever’. The natural bond between them brought out the humour and upset in their relationship.
Rosie Sugrue has a stunning singing voice and in her most glamorous, sexy costume commanded the stage as the sinister KIller Queen. ’Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ were sung with real panache. Her partner in crime Khashoggi was played with real style and flare by Max Mitchell displaying a real wicked, evil sense of humour. His comic elements were delivered neatly and to great effect.
Georgia Brannan was a delightfully vivacious Oz whose ‘Only The Good Die Young’ was sung with real sincerity. Ryan Livingstone’s Brit was an absolute triumph displaying an agility that possibly few others could come up with and looking very much a Braveheart character. The defiant ‘I Want It All’ with Brit and Oz was extremely powerful. Making sure that all ends well Russell Coid was a most impressive Buddy with his rich singing voice, strong convincing acting and clear diction.
The fantastic on stage rock band was in grand form and very much part of the action. Excellent use was made of the split levels on stage so that this large cast filled the stage which never looked overcrowded.
This too was a technically brilliant production. Highly effective, imaginative lighting combined with video screening created the appropriate moods and situations along the way. Fabulous costumes and wigs which were colourful and quite outstanding added to the stunning visual effects.
The rousing, exhilerating finale with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ the icing on the cake finished this mind blowing production. It was often difficult to remember that this was an amateur production which could undoubtedly surpass many professional productions.
An absolutely outstanding production which the Bo’s should be so proud of, You really are ‘The Champions’. Superb !
