As usual at this School we were greeted by some very polite ushers who escorted us to our seats. Imagine if you can a world with no musical instruments, only approved music to listen to coming via a Global corporation. A group of rebel Bohemians and a couple of dreamers who aim to change this by finding the heart of Rock. In this search we are treated to a series of classic Queen songs cleverly interwoven into this story by Ben Elton. This was a musical challenge for the company and it must have been an absolute treat for the the live orchestra, under the skillful batonship of David Cowie, who managed to recreate that special sound.
Leading us in this future romp was Galileo Figaro (Harry Lloyd) a dreamer with lyrics to old songs perpetually echoing in his mind. This was a part requiring a strong Rock style voice and Harry did not disappoint a s he belted and falsettoed his way through many classic songs. The young lady he meets in hospital shares his rebellious nature and joins him on a road to rock and romance. This was Scaramouche (Grace Sturman) his new friend delighted us with her vocal talent and showed her acting prowess as we saw the many different emotions that she had to go through. The story would not be complete without the baddies Killer Queen (Libby Simpson) and Khashoggi (Charlie Sell) who popped up to spoil things whenever they could. It is at this point that we start to discover the Bohemians, a group of rock fanatics (without knowing what rock is) and with an assortment of Rock Legend names. Britt (Patrick Kemp) ,full name Britney Spears, came bouncing into the action with his fast talking but very speculative knowledge of rock. You could not help but like him as his stage presence was infectious. He had a girlfriend called Ozzy Osbourne or Oz for short (Amber Atkins) who absolutely delighted us with her singing and performance standard. The final part of the Bohemians was Buddy Holly (Matthew Patrick) who was the guardian of the Vid E O and tried to be the voice of reason but had never tried to play the video. Well sung and acted he complimented the trio of rebels.
This show relies on a strong ensemble singing these great songs and we were not let down. Whether we were looking at Ga Ga Girls, Teen Queens, Super Yuppies or a Bohemian ensemble there was never any doubt as to the quality of singing and movement. This made the show even more impressive, but the cream on the top were the principal dancers who moved through the show in total unison, obviously well drilled.
This large production team had added their own specialisms to this production which helped to make it a very enjoyable evening. A great evening finished off with the Bohemian Rhapsody what else. Thank you and well done.
