The tried and tested system of working honed over 25 years certainly paid off in this production. In order for this to happen it relies on a team of dedicated volunteers who work with the young people for many weeks on dance, drama and singing plus the costume designers and makers, set design and makers, lighting, sound and musicians. The team should be justly proud of their achievements this week.
None of this vision or application of specialist skills would be of use without a talented cast to present the production to us. This cast had talents in abundance.
The principals were on the top of their game and got into, and maintained their individual characters throughout. Much of the action centres around Scaramouche (Becky Cartwright) and Galileo (Ben Coleman) as they search for the solution to the riddle of where to find real music. There was a tension and chemistry between them throughout which many adult actors would struggle to achieve, so well done. There were also some very strong performances from Zach Andrews (Khashoggi), James Mason (Buddy), Nadine Hewitt (Killer Queen), Britney (Liam Wilkes) and Charlotte Farmer (Oz). They all had strong voices and good acting skills. As with most musical productions the story relies on cameo interventions by several performers in different guises and the major principals were well supported by Maisie Andrews, Freya Hawkins, Sadie Groves, Brooke John, Leah Gallagher, Beth Crosby, Melody Hayward, Charlotte Carter, Emily Hardy, Ellie Coleman, Louise Witton, Mabel Deakin, Reece Hall, Libby Dawson, Alfie Stokes, Alex Carr and Joe Harley. Whatever contribution made by them was in character and essential to moving the story on. Add to all this an ensemble of enthusiastic performers who are developing their skills in the performing arts ready to take over roles in the future. Spotlight is destined to continue. The choreography was inspired and very slickly executed by the performers. The singing by principals, named groups and the ensemble was strong and confident throughout. The set, lighting, sound and excellent costumes all made for a professional evening’s entertainment. The talented musicians in the pit under the direction of Ian Windsor put life into Queen’s music with Steve Pearson showing that it isn’t only Brian May who can play that iconic guitar solo! They supported the singing and big dance routines and the performers obviously had confidence in them.
Congratulations to everyone involved!
