A vivacious and confident opening number ‘Brand New Day’ immediately set a high standard for this varied and interesting concert. Eighty five exuberant youngsters delivered a programme which comprised of some well known but also some lesser known numbers which were refreshing to hear. The section entitled ‘Travel’ took us to various parts of the world including Dublin and New York with ‘What’s Up Doc’ particularly well done by Kieran Lynch and the younger company. The sequence entitled ‘Growing Up’ was very cleverly put together with ‘I Know Now’ and ‘Beautiful’ two of my favourites. The first act concluded with a ‘Love’ medley where ‘Can’t Help Lovin Dat Man’ was beautifully sung by Ellen McNeill and three extremely talented young men with great voices led the company in ‘We Belong’ So many amateur companies are having difficulty recruiting young men so hopefully these young men will continue in the musical world.
A fantastic medley from ‘Wicked’ got the second act off to a wonderful start where once again we were treated to some very fine solo singing and ensemble work. Philip Wootton and Francesca Blair were very slick and amusing in their number ‘If I Didn’t Have You’ which contrasted well with some of the more serious numbers.
So many youngsters were given the opportunity to sing solos or ensemble work and the talent was quite outstanding. The full company singing too was full bodied no more so than in ‘I’ll Be There For You’ and in the finale ‘Sing’ ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ and ‘We Built This City’ which was not only powerful but demonstrated how well these youngsters can maintain harmonies and sing with expression and feeling.
The movement and dancing, which was also varied and interesting throughout, was energetic and enthusiastic. I very much admire the way so many youngsters on stage remember all their dance routines and move with such ease from one setting to another.
This was again an evening of sheer joy both on and off stage showcasing some real stars of the future and confirming that the future of musical theatre is secure. Simple costumes, clever staging and lighting enhanced the production. The use of backing tracks was also a real success resulting in a great balance of sound.
I am a great supporter of youth theatre and this company is most fortunate in having the dedication and skills of a production team who actively encourage and develop the skills of these talented youngsters. The company should be very pleased and proud of their achievements.
