NOMADS certainly made up for lost time with Waiting in the Wings, a compilation of musical theatre song and dance.  By including virtually all members of Adult Nomads, Young Nomads Juniors and Young Nomads Seniors, Director Andy Thorpe had his hands full with a cast of seventy-five performing forty-eight songs, company routines and a contemporary dance.

Musical Director Joseph Hall’s talent was on full show as the company produced some lovely harmonies supporting and augmenting the performances of the soloists throughout.   I am resisting the temptation to name any of the soloists.  Suffice it to say they all deserved to be there showcasing their talent.

The whole Company did full justice too to the impressive choreography of Jess Clifford and Jodie Corbett.  In particular the contemporary dance to “Jeffrey’s Escape” from the 9/11 film soundtrack which was dramatic and atmospheric.

The staging was of necessity minimal with so many performers but the raised area with stairs either side was used well and any furniture was on and off as swiftly as was viable.  The lighting design (Elliott Papworth & Jamie Maguire) was good with only the odd late cue early in the week.  I did have problems with the sound levels as they did overcome the singers at times, particularly the voices of Young Nomads Juniors and underscoring the dialogue in the contemporary dance number which I am afraid was inaudible.  However, I certainly did not envy the Sound Operator (Liam Corbett) trying to keep track of such a large number of body mics.  I must compliment the excellent programme design by the way.

Congratulations to Wardrobe Mistress Sarah Smith and her four-strong team of ladies. The costumes, of which there were hundreds I am sure, were absolutely superb. The illuminated costume worn by the soloist in I Am What I Am brought gasps and a couple of little cheers from the audience. The costumes coloured the whole show. An ocular treat.

The thrill of being back on stage performing song and dance shone through the whole Company. It was super to see not only familiar but some new faces among the adult Nomads and I was in awe of the confidence of the Young Nomads Juniors team especially those leading the songs.  The enthusiasm and outstanding amount of talent coming through the Young Nomads Seniors team was tangible and I added one or two names to my “ones to watch “ list.

Congratulations to Director Andy Thorpe and his production team and to all participants in this extremely enjoyable show.  It was obvious that the full house, who all seemed quite happy to follow the current rules and regulations, were also glad to be back in the theatre.

An enjoyable evening with a nicely put together eclectic programme. Thank you Nomads.
