Here is a Society who is as near professional as you can get, and this production was no exception. Set in the foyer of a local theatre, ruled over by big-wig Robin Pocketts, brilliantly portrayed by Stephen Watt, a welcome to Stephen now having moved back to Ipswich. Robin keeps the staff under his thumb; he not only gives orders personally but with drop down screens.
The company feel that they are equally as good as those performing on stage, and they are!!
Relationships bloom among the staff. There was incredible energy and verve from the girls, Rosie (delightful Lucy Melamphy) and Lucy (Bronwyn Cooper) having the biggest smile I’ve seen.
Rosie’s attraction to Stephen (Peter Ling) is evident, finding every opportunity to be at his side. There are other romances afoot between Gary (Dan Moore) and Ben (Stephen Bell) which is in jeopardy as Dan is about to accept a job in Australia. The set is moved expertly by the cast, and refreshments are produced out of nowhere!
There was a simple set but exactly as you would envisage a theatre foyer which cleverly revolves then the refreshments are being sold, and with bottles of champagne, trays of ice-cream, it was so realistic.
The score was very tuneful and of course with Richard Healey in charge – you would not know it was just a keyboard and not a group.
Well done to Emily Watt whose personality was bestowed on the cast, I have known Emily many years and she has gone from strength to strength – good luck with her next production, a baby!!
