When ‘Up Pompeii’ is mentioned, the first thought is of Frankie Howerd. Before I went to see this production I wondered how the performers would manage to get past this image. I needn’t have worried as Chris Flint was perfect in the role of the slave Lurcio. He had all the Howerd mannerisms, voice inflections and interaction with the audience. The venue was ideal for this play as it allowed Lurcio to get close to the audience and address them with the expected conspirational asides. It doesn’t matter how well the character of Lurcio is portrayed he needs to be supported by a strong cast and this was certainly the case here. All the acting was appropriately ‘OTT’ and this was epitomised by Sarah Diamond (Senna the Soothsayer). Unfortunately space doesn’t permit individual mention of all the cast but be assured that every single member made a valuable contribution to the success of the event. The action was fast paced and it was all supported by an imaginative set allowing maximum use of the space available, good props and costumes. Well done to everyone involved!
