This was a new play to me, but one that I found was intriguing, in that it could apply to the real world, with the two ladies of the title being the Eastern European wife of a President of the USA and an older woman married to the President of France.  What unfolds is at times uncomfortable and awkward, but which the audience found humour in, leaving us on a cliff edge where there could have been several possible endings, certainly a talking point for the journey home!

The backdrop was a little basic, however the actors held the attention, so there was no need for anything more.  Lighting was appropriate, and the actors all projected well.

Costumes were good, a nice contrast between the two ladies, although I would have liked to see Helen in tights, and I felt Sophia’s black dress was perhaps slightly out of kilter with her character, but as it was a replacement, perhaps it was meant.

Georgina Lilly shone as Helen, the outspoken wife of the French President, there was no mistaking her strength and control – beautifully portrayed, she commanded the stage from the moment she walked on.

Julie Gough as Sophia, the slightly more anxious but definitely conniving wife of America’s President, matched Georgina with her mastery of the accent and the way she shared confidences.  This pair were so well-matched showing such different characters, and their diverse reactions to their troubled situations.  I was very impressed.

Bruce King gave George a sometimes fierce sometimes conciliatory demeanour.  I think this was the best I’ve seen Bruce.

Sandy was played by Louise Donaghy with conviction, a formidable lady, but showing her slightly softer side - very well done.

The final cast member was Maria Blyth as Fatima the maid – I understand it was Maria’s first time on stage, and her enthusiasm for the role shone through, nicely achieved.

I was impressed with the lapses into French, it appeared to be very authentic with good accents.

My thanks to WDS for their hospitality, good to catch up with your members, and to see a very interesting well-directed and well-acted play.
