What a very enjoyable evening's entertainment we were treated to while watching “Ormskirk Theatre company” production of “Two” from the pen of Jim Cartwright. The play is set in a Northern Pub and takes a look at different aspects of working class life through the performing of a number of monologues and duets from some very interesting and different characters, we hear about love, hate, domestic violence and mourning, and are introduced to the comedic as well as the tragic side of life. This play can be performed either with just two actors playing all the parts or as in this case using a number of actors which worked very well. All the actors without exception worked as a team with no weak links producing excellent performances and good characterizations, however I feel I should mention Gary Simpson and Pat Baker who played the important demanding roles of the pub landlord and landlady, they produced outstanding performances, and their characters were the glue that held the play together.
Diction was very clear from all the actors, comic timing was spot on and the pace was just right which meant the audience could follow the action and the story very well. The nature of this play is like a roller coaster, there is some very good comedy mixed with stories dealing with delicate and tragic subjects and I must congratulate the director and actors on the way they handled these subjects as they were presented very well with a great deal of understanding.
This play is just right for performing in the setting of “Upstairs at Disraeli's” as it is a working pub and the venue has its own bar area which meant the audience where seated within the set making them feel they were part of the action. The lighting was just right and was important to the success of this play
Congratulations to director Andy Hawkes for giving us a superb production and well done to all involved in bringing this play to the stage my friend and I had a very enjoyable evening, thank you for inviting us.
