All Saints Elton Theatre Company should be extremely proud of their production of Two by Jim Cartwright. As one of my favourite plays, I came into this performance with high expectations — and I’m pleased to say it did not disappoint.
This was the first time I have seen Two staged in a traverse configuration, and it proved to be a highly effective choice. Bringing the audience closer to the action successfully created the feeling of being customers within the pub itself. The actors regularly acknowledged the audience and cleverly incorporated them into the storytelling, further blurring the line between performer and spectator. The set featured a fully working bar, open for use at both the opening and interval, alongside retro arcade pub games supplied by The Arcade Club — a thoughtful and immersive touch that strengthened the world of the play.
The sound and lighting design by Grace Young and Laura Thompson provided a strong foundation for the performance. Both elements worked seamlessly to develop atmosphere and highlight key moments within the story. A particularly nice touch was the curated playlist for the production, made accessible via a Spotify link in the programme — a modern and engaging addition that the audience clearly appreciated.
Costuming by Jean Abbott was highly effective, especially considering the challenge of differentiating a wide range of characters portrayed by just two actors.
Each costume helped clearly define character, allowing quick transitions without confusion. I was particularly drawn to the costumes for Fred and Alice, which felt both specific and authentic.

Turning to the acting, Charlotte Crowley and Kieran Hickey delivered an impressive performance, tackling the many roles within the play with confidence and skill. Both actors should be congratulated for their stamina, commitment, and versatility throughout.
Charlotte Crowley’s stage presence was commanding, holding the audience in the palm of her hand. Her range was exceptional, with each character clearly defined through accent, physicality, and emotional truth. From moments of uproarious laughter to genuine heartbreak, her performance was a masterclass in storytelling. Standout characters included Maudie, Alice, Lesley, and the Other Woman, though her portrayal of the Landlady truly stole the show. A performance to be very proud of.
Kieran Hickey proved to be a strong and supportive counterpart, delivering a thoughtful and grounded performance across his many roles. His character transitions were subtle yet effective, with standout moments as Fred, the Little Boy, and the Landlord. His choices demonstrated a solid understanding of character, and with continued confidence, there is clearly even more to come. Keep pushing yourself.
Together, Charlotte Crowley and Kieran Hickey created a compelling and engaging piece of theatre that honoured Jim Cartwright’s writing while making the production feel fresh and immersive.

Thank you to All Saints Elton Theatre Company for inviting me to experience this production of 'Two'. I look forward to seeing what the company brings to the stage next.
