“The cast are ready to create an atmosphere that simply reeks class”. This was a quote in the program from Joanne Hand the Director/choreographer, and yes they certainly did that, it was what I call “a beautiful production.” Such a gentle nod back to Hollywood musicals many of us loved. Joanne, when Claire and Luke danced you encapsulated Fred and Ginger so well. The opening of Act 2 was a spectacle of colour and razzmatazz the cast had such fun. You grabbed the audience attention straight away after the break. I counted 6 musical numbers you had set for the company, such a lot of work. You achieved such a high standard, not counting individual dances, well done you deserve a medal, and so do they.

The Orchestra and company were under the baton of Nigel Ball. What a wealth of wonderful numbers this Score contains, so skilfully written by Irvin Berlin. Your Orchestra complimented the score giving a very polished performance. We must not forget so much work done by yourself and the rehearsal accompanists Sarah Harland and Steven Hood, even before you are joined by the orchestra.

With a show like Top Hat your leading cast need to be able to master the 3 elements of Acting, Dancing and Singing to a high standard as they have some exposed moments centre stage on their own. Luke Oldfield playing the part of Jerry Travers was bang on it. From the opening number through the classic “Top hat white tie and tails”, and the adorable “Let’s face the music and dance”, he held that relaxed manor in what was a mammoth part.

Falling in love with Jerry is Dale Tremont played by Claire Monaghan, a huge case of mistaken identity occurs and from that we have many humorous interactions. The main one is when she sings “Wild about you” what a great number and Claire pressed the “full on” button. So to “Let’s face the music and dance”, such poise and style, thank you.

Playing the part of millionaire Horace Hardwick was Julian Cound, who we have seen playing such diverse parts recently, and again giving conviction to the roll. Samantha Morrison playing Horace’s wife Madge, gave us a sharp, knows her own mind character. Their duet “Outside of that I love you” gave us an insight to their relationship. It was nice to see Samantha back on stage after sitting out a couple of shows.

Alberto Beddini, a fashion designer played by Andrew Hamilton, threw himself into an over the top performance with great aplomb. Occasionally I missed his line because of the accent but he made up for this with his flamboyant character.

Bates the Valet to Horace, played by Christopher McCann reminded me of Manuel in Faulty towers, his endless disguises added to the comedy of the evening, we really wanted more.

Playing a cameo part in the chorus was Stacy Dobson, what a great addition to the cast, I have seen her play Mable in “Pirates”, there is much more to come from that lady.

Rounding up my report, a feast of frocks for us to admire, what a talented team DOS have gathered under the guidance of Linda Sams, thank you for fulfilling my expectations, lit beautifully by Alex Edwards. Thanks to Stephen Metcalfe for wigs they really finish off the style of the show, I still remember your wigs from Priscilla, nothing could top that.

DOS a delightful evening not to be missed, thank you for your hospitality.
