Tom’s brother, Peter, has measles, so Tom is sent to stay with his Aunt Gwen and Uncle Alan in a big old house owned by the mysterious Mrs. Bartholomew. The main feature in the house is an Old Grandfather clock, which sometimes strikes thirteen. This happens one night and Tom goes to investigate. He goes through a door and finds a mysterious garden. On walking through he finds himself in 1800’s and meets a young girl called Hatty. When he goes back home he finds he has not aged but every time he goes into the garden Hatty has aged. Who is the mysterious Mrs. Bartholomew and why does she wind the clock every night?
This play, written by Philippa Pearce and adapted by David Wood, was performed well by the company, who all worked together to provide a good nights entertainment. Taking the lead role was Finley Rowland as Tom, who was hardly off stage. He performed well and had great support from Gracie Reynolds as Hatty. Mrs. Bartholomew was played by Valerie Tomlinson who came into her own during the second act where her true identity was revealed. Good support came from Mark Nattrass and Beck Easen as Uncle Alan and Aunt Gwen and from Peter Barker as Peter.
Also the remainder of the cast worked well, too many to mention but congratulations to them all.
Louise Farmer did a good job with the larger cast and it showed. Costumes suited the period the play was set it. The set was original and I was intrigued how it went from house to garden.
Congratulations to Louise and cast.
