David Wood's adaptation for the stage of Philippa Pearces's story is quite delightful. Young Tom, staying with relatives, to avoid catching measles, wrote to his brother Peter to tell him of his adventure. This involved a wonderful clock. Whenever it struck thirteen Tom was able to go though it into a large garden where he met a young girl, Hatty. There's plenty of magic and mystery as the tale unfolds. Twelve year old Alexander Lee was extremely good as Tom. Three very competent youngsters player Hatty from small child to adult. Ally and Chris Ellis were notable as Tom's aunt and uncle and Moira Barnes-Jones played the enigmatic Mrs Bartholomew very well. There were quite a lot of competent players with cameo roles and I was very intrigued by the five black-clad youngsters who portrayed Tom's Imagination This was very symbolic. Heartiest congratulations to Rory Duncombe and Daniel Davis. Sixteen year old Rory designed the exciting Clock Mechanism, and with help, the young men constructed this wondrous piece of scenery. The lighting and sound effects were fine and the costumes were excellent. Congratulations to all concerned.
